According to Parliamentary Asbestos Seminar by statistics and best guest estimates, they calculated that from 1968 to 2010, the total death toll from mesothelioma, asbestosis and asbestos-related lung cancer may have exceeded 110,000. This figure seen as ‘reasonable’ by a leading UK epidemiologist working in this field who suggested that by ‘2050 a further 45,000 mesothelioma deaths can be expected in Great Britain’.

What is Mesothelioma?
Mesothelioma is a type of cancer most often caused by exposure to asbestos, usually through inhalation of the toxic chemical. Asbestos occurs naturally, and was introduced into industry and home use because of its fire, electrical and chemical resistance, as well as being a good sound absorber. This made it popular for many practical home and industrial uses, including building insulation – which is one of the largest causes of asbestosis and mesothelioma.
Mesothelioma is a form of cancer that resides mainly around the lungs, but can occur in other organs too. The cancer attacks the cells surrounding these organs, which leads to chest pain and further serious complications.
Asbestos was extensively used as a building material in the UK from the 1950s through to the mid-1980s. It was used for a variety of purposes and was ideal for fireproofing and insulation. Any building built before 2000 (houses, factories, offices, schools, hospitals etc) can contain asbestos. Asbestos materials in good condition are safe unless asbestos fibres become airborne, which happens when materials are damaged.
